About this converter

PNG, JPEG, TIFF and BMP are the four raster formats most image work arrives in, and each spends its bytes differently. PNG and BMP are close to a raw record of the pixels, JPEG has already discarded detail, and TIFF is often an uncompressed scan or print master.

This tool accepts those four inputs and rewrites each one in a modern format. The pixels are re-encoded with a modern compressor, so the file shrinks because the encoding is more efficient, not because the picture is cropped. Transparency survives into every target, and the canvas keeps its dimensions unless you set a width or height.

How it works

Choose an output format

Pick the format you want the result in before you add anything. Every file in the queue is converted to that one format, so the choice shapes the whole run.

Add your files

Drop files onto the page or use the file picker. Each file is checked against the formats this tool accepts, and anything that does not match is reported by name.

Download the result

When a conversion finishes, download the converted file. Uploads and results are deleted after 2 hours, so keep your own copy.

Formats you can convert

Every file below is accepted as input, and the result is written as WebP, AVIF, and JPEG XL. Those outputs can each store a lossy or a lossless image, so the quality slider and the lossless switch decide which one you get.

  • PNG — lossless screenshots, logos and graphics, often with transparency
  • JPEG — the everyday lossy photo format of cameras and phones
  • TIFF — scans and print masters, often stored uncompressed
  • BMP — raw Windows bitmaps with almost no compression

Quality and what changes

JPEG cannot regain detail it already discarded, while PNG, TIFF and BMP still hold their exact pixels. Writing WebP, AVIF or JPEG XL is lossy unless you enable the lossless switch those targets support; in lossy mode the quality slider decides how much detail is kept. Setting a width or height removes pixels before encoding and saves more than re-encoding alone.

Privacy and limits

Guests can convert files up to 100 megabytes and run 5 conversions per day. A free account raises the limit to 500 megabytes and 25 conversions per day, and paid plans go up to 100 gigabytes.

Files you upload and the results you download are kept only long enough for you to collect them and are deleted after 2 hours. After that window nothing of yours remains on the server.

You do not need an account to convert a file; signing in only raises the size and daily limits.

Questions and answers

Which output format should I choose?

WebP plays in every current browser and is the safe default. AVIF and JPEG XL usually reach a smaller file at the same quality but need newer software. Try WebP first.

Is re-encoding a lossless operation?

Only when the source is lossless and you enable the lossless switch. PNG, TIFF and BMP keep every pixel there; a JPEG source has already lost detail that cannot be restored.

Should I resize or just re-encode?

Resizing removes pixels and usually saves more than a new encoding alone. Set a width or height when the destination does not need the original size; otherwise leave both empty. Without enlargement is on by default.

Does transparency survive?

Yes. WebP, AVIF and JPEG XL all carry an alpha channel, so a transparent PNG keeps its transparency in any of the three outputs.
