How to compress BMP files

Upload your BMP file

Drag and drop a file or click to select one. Keep this page open while the file uploads and converts.

Compress the file

NexMedia re-encodes your BMP file on its own servers at the quality you choose. Processing time depends on the file size and how busy the queue is.

Download the compressed file

When the compression finishes, the download appears on this page. Your compressed file is kept for 2 hours, then deleted.

About BMP

the raw Windows bitmap: uncompressed pixels, no cleverness

BMP is Windows' original bitmap format: it stores pixels essentially uncompressed, row by row, with an optional RLE squeeze that almost nothing uses. Simple programs and some tools still emit it.

BMP is the least compressed image format in common existence: a 1920×1080 screenshot weighs about 6 MB because every pixel is written out in full, whatever the picture contains.

What compressing BMP does

Compressing a BMP is the biggest single win in image compression: the pixels move into WebP, AVIF or PNG, which describe the same image with actual compression.

A 6 MB BMP screenshot becomes a 50–150 KB PNG, a similar lossless WebP, or a 20–50 KB lossy WebP — a reduction of about 98%.

Settings you can change

Before you compress BMP, you can adjust: Width, Height, Scale fit, Crop position, Never enlarge, Quality, Lossless, Progressive, Remove metadata, Auto-orient from EXIF, Rotate, and Background.

Limits

Guests can compress files up to 100 megabytes and run 5 conversions per day; a free account raises this to 500 megabytes and 25 per day; paid plans go up to 100 gigabytes.

Your compressed BMP file is kept for 2 hours, then deleted.

Compressing BMP: questions and answers

Will compressing BMP reduce quality?

Because BMP stores pixels raw, a lossless conversion loses nothing at all, and even a lossy encode starts from perfect data rather than compounding old artifacts.

Can BMP files be compressed without any loss?

Yes — BMP itself is uncompressed, so a lossless target (PNG, lossless WebP) reproduces every pixel exactly while finally compressing them.

Which settings can I change when compressing BMP?

You can adjust: Width, Height, Scale fit, Crop position, Never enlarge, Quality, Lossless, Progressive, Remove metadata, Auto-orient from EXIF, Rotate, and Background. the quality slider barely matters at this starting point: even the highest quality settings leave the file a tiny fraction of the original

How much smaller will my BMP file get?

BMP files routinely shrink by more than 95%; it is the format with the largest and safest reduction of all.

How large a BMP file can I compress for free?

Guests can compress files up to 100 megabytes and run 5 conversions per day; a free account raises this to 500 megabytes and 25 per day; paid plans go up to 100 gigabytes. Your compressed file is kept for 2 hours, then deleted.
