How to compress JPEG files
Upload your JPEG file
Drag and drop a file or click to select one. Keep this page open while the file uploads and converts.
Compress the file
NexMedia re-encodes your JPEG file on its own servers at the quality you choose. Processing time depends on the file size and how busy the queue is.
Download the compressed file
When the compression finishes, the download appears on this page. Your compressed file is kept for 2 hours, then deleted.
About JPEG
the standard photo format, compressed with lossy JPEG encoding
JPEG — published as .jpg — is the world's photo format: every camera, phone and browser writes and reads it. It stores images with the lossy discrete-cosine compression designed for photographs in 1992.
JPEG files grow with megapixels and quality settings: a 12-megapixel phone photo at a high quality factor lands near 4–6 MB, and cameras set to maximum quality write even more.
What compressing JPEG does
Compressing a JPEG re-encodes the image into a modern format: WebP, AVIF and JPEG XL all hold the same picture with visibly better efficiency than JPEG's 1992 tables.
A 5 MB camera JPEG re-encoded to WebP at matched quality typically lands between 1.5 and 2.5 MB; AVIF and JPEG XL often go smaller still.
Settings you can change
Before you compress JPEG, you can adjust: Width, Height, Scale fit, Crop position, Never enlarge, Quality, Lossless, Progressive, Remove metadata, Auto-orient from EXIF, Rotate, and Background.
Limits
Guests can compress files up to 100 megabytes and run 5 conversions per day; a free account raises this to 500 megabytes and 25 per day; paid plans go up to 100 gigabytes.
Your compressed JPEG file is kept for 2 hours, then deleted.
Compressing JPEG: questions and answers
Will compressing JPEG reduce quality?
One extra lossy generation is fine at high quality targets: at matched visual quality the picture is indistinguishable, and the modern encoder wastes far fewer bits on it.
Can JPEG files be compressed without any loss?
JPEG itself is lossy, so a smaller JPEG always costs a little quality. If you need a mathematically lossless copy, the lossless modes of WebP or JPEG XL keep every pixel exactly.
Which settings can I change when compressing JPEG?
You can adjust: Width, Height, Scale fit, Crop position, Never enlarge, Quality, Lossless, Progressive, Remove metadata, Auto-orient from EXIF, Rotate, and Background. the quality slider maps directly onto JPEG artifacts — around 80–90 most photos are visually identical to the original while dropping far in size
How much smaller will my JPEG file get?
Photos typically shrink by half to two-thirds moving from JPEG to WebP or AVIF at matched quality, and more at slightly lower quality targets.
How large a JPEG file can I compress for free?
Guests can compress files up to 100 megabytes and run 5 conversions per day; a free account raises this to 500 megabytes and 25 per day; paid plans go up to 100 gigabytes. Your compressed file is kept for 2 hours, then deleted.
