How to compress HEIC / HEIF files

Upload your HEIC / HEIF file

Drag and drop a file or click to select one. Keep this page open while the file uploads and converts.

Compress the file

NexMedia re-encodes your HEIC / HEIF file on its own servers at the quality you choose. Processing time depends on the file size and how busy the queue is.

Download the compressed file

When the compression finishes, the download appears on this page. Your compressed file is kept for 2 hours, then deleted.

About HEIC / HEIF

Apple's HEIF photo format, the default on iPhones since iOS 11

HEIC is the image container of Apple's HEIF standard, built on the same HEVC compression that iPhones record video with. It has been the default photo format on iPhones since 2017.

HEIC photos are already efficiently compressed, but they inherit the camera's full resolution and quality factor: a 48-megapixel iPhone photo can still reach the tens of megabytes.

What compressing HEIC / HEIF does

Compressing a HEIC converts it out of Apple's ecosystem: WebP, AVIF and JPEG keep the photo viewable everywhere, at a quality factor you choose.

A 3 MB HEIC photo becomes a 1.5–2 MB WebP at matched quality; exporting to JPEG for compatibility typically doubles the size again if quality is kept.

Settings you can change

Before you compress HEIC / HEIF, you can adjust: Width, Height, Scale fit, Crop position, Never enlarge, Quality, Lossless, Progressive, Remove metadata, Auto-orient from EXIF, Rotate, and Background.

Limits

Guests can compress files up to 100 megabytes and run 5 conversions per day; a free account raises this to 500 megabytes and 25 per day; paid plans go up to 100 gigabytes.

Your compressed HEIC / HEIF file is kept for 2 hours, then deleted.

Compressing HEIC / HEIF: questions and answers

Will compressing HEIC / HEIF reduce quality?

HEIC's HEVC-based compression is strong, so re-encoding to WebP or AVIF at matched quality keeps the difference invisible; JPEG costs a little more size for the same look.

Can HEIC / HEIF files be compressed without any loss?

HEIC can carry lossless images, but iPhone photos are lossy HEVC, so conversion means one more lossy generation at worst — invisible at sensible quality targets.

Which settings can I change when compressing HEIC / HEIF?

You can adjust: Width, Height, Scale fit, Crop position, Never enlarge, Quality, Lossless, Progressive, Remove metadata, Auto-orient from EXIF, Rotate, and Background. the quality slider decides how aggressively the new encoder thins detail, and 85–90 is where phone photos stop showing any difference

How much smaller will my HEIC / HEIF file get?

HEIC photos shrink by a third to a half moving to WebP or AVIF at matched quality; HEIC was already efficient, so gains are smaller than from JPEG or PNG.

How large a HEIC / HEIF file can I compress for free?

Guests can compress files up to 100 megabytes and run 5 conversions per day; a free account raises this to 500 megabytes and 25 per day; paid plans go up to 100 gigabytes. Your compressed file is kept for 2 hours, then deleted.
