How to compress FLAC files
Upload your FLAC file
Drag and drop a file or click to select one. Keep this page open while the file uploads and converts.
Compress the file
NexMedia re-encodes your FLAC file on its own servers at the quality you choose. Processing time depends on the file size and how busy the queue is.
Download the compressed file
When the compression finishes, the download appears on this page. Your compressed file is kept for 2 hours, then deleted.
About FLAC
lossless compressed audio: archive quality at roughly half the WAV size
FLAC is the lossless audio format of music archives: every sample of the recording survives decoding exactly, while the file runs at about half the size raw PCM would need.
FLAC is still lossless: a full album in FLAC occupies 250–400 MB because it stores the recording completely, and hi-res files at 24 bits or 96 kHz run far larger.
What compressing FLAC does
Compressing a FLAC means choosing what the file is for: Opus or AAC keep it listenable everywhere at a tenth of the size, and the audio is re-encoded either way.
A 300 MB album in FLAC becomes 30–40 MB in Opus at a transparent quality, with every audible characteristic intact.
Settings you can change
Before you compress FLAC, you can adjust: Audio codec, Rate control, Audio bitrate, Quality (VBR), Sample rate, Channels, Normalize loudness, Trim start, Trim duration, and Keep tags.
Limits
Guests can compress files up to 100 megabytes and run 5 conversions per day; a free account raises this to 500 megabytes and 25 per day; paid plans go up to 100 gigabytes.
Your compressed FLAC file is kept for 2 hours, then deleted.
Compressing FLAC: questions and answers
Will compressing FLAC reduce quality?
FLAC's audio is a perfect copy, so the encoder starts from ideal data: at a transparent bitrate the lossy result is indistinguishable to listeners, and no artifacts compound.
Can FLAC files be compressed without any loss?
FLAC itself is the lossless floor: its samples cannot shrink further without becoming lossy, so real compression means moving to a perceptual codec such as Opus or AAC.
Which settings can I change when compressing FLAC?
You can adjust: Audio codec, Rate control, Audio bitrate, Quality (VBR), Sample rate, Channels, Normalize loudness, Trim start, Trim duration, and Keep tags. the quality control picks the perceptual target, with the highest settings keeping the result transparent for critical listening
How much smaller will my FLAC file get?
FLAC to Opus or AAC at transparent settings typically means an 85–90% reduction; stay in FLAC only if bit-exact archiving is the goal.
How large a FLAC file can I compress for free?
Guests can compress files up to 100 megabytes and run 5 conversions per day; a free account raises this to 500 megabytes and 25 per day; paid plans go up to 100 gigabytes. Your compressed file is kept for 2 hours, then deleted.
