How to compress AIFF files
Upload your AIFF file
Drag and drop a file or click to select one. Keep this page open while the file uploads and converts.
Compress the file
NexMedia re-encodes your AIFF file on its own servers at the quality you choose. Processing time depends on the file size and how busy the queue is.
Download the compressed file
When the compression finishes, the download appears on this page. Your compressed file is kept for 2 hours, then deleted.
About AIFF
Apple's uncompressed audio container, the WAV of the Mac world
AIFF is Apple's audio file format: uncompressed PCM samples in a Mac-native container, written by older audio workflows and still emitted by some tools as the Mac equivalent of WAV.
AIFF carries raw PCM, so it shares WAV's weight: ten minutes of CD-quality audio is about 100 MB, and studio-rate files multiply that several times.
What compressing AIFF does
Compressing an AIFF moves it into modern encodings: Opus or AAC store what listeners hear in a small fraction of the bytes, and FLAC keeps it bit-exact at half the size.
An hour of CD-quality AIFF is around 600 MB; in Opus at a transparent setting it is 30–40 MB, and FLAC brings it to roughly 300 MB.
Settings you can change
Before you compress AIFF, you can adjust: Audio codec, Rate control, Audio bitrate, Quality (VBR), Sample rate, Channels, Normalize loudness, Trim start, Trim duration, and Keep tags.
Limits
Guests can compress files up to 100 megabytes and run 5 conversions per day; a free account raises this to 500 megabytes and 25 per day; paid plans go up to 100 gigabytes.
Your compressed AIFF file is kept for 2 hours, then deleted.
Compressing AIFF: questions and answers
Will compressing AIFF reduce quality?
As with WAV, the source is a perfect sample copy, so a transparent lossy encode is audibly identical — the file just stops storing inaudible detail.
Can AIFF files be compressed without any loss?
Yes: FLAC converts AIFF bit-exactly, since both carry PCM; the samples survive and only the packaging and the size change.
Which settings can I change when compressing AIFF?
You can adjust: Audio codec, Rate control, Audio bitrate, Quality (VBR), Sample rate, Channels, Normalize loudness, Trim start, Trim duration, and Keep tags. the quality control chooses between a transparent lossy result and FLAC's bit-exact copy, and either lands far below the original size
How much smaller will my AIFF file get?
AIFF mirrors WAV: 90–95% smaller in a lossy codec, about half in FLAC with no sample changed.
How large a AIFF file can I compress for free?
Guests can compress files up to 100 megabytes and run 5 conversions per day; a free account raises this to 500 megabytes and 25 per day; paid plans go up to 100 gigabytes. Your compressed file is kept for 2 hours, then deleted.
