About WebP files
Google's web image format with lossy or lossless compression
WebP is an image format released by Google in 2010. It supports lossy and lossless compression, transparency and animation.
Websites use it to serve images smaller than the equivalent JPEG or PNG; all current browsers display it.
WebP: what conversion changes
Converting WebP re-encodes pixels.
WebP: settings to change
Before you convert WebP files, you can adjust: Width, Height, Scale fit, Crop position, Never enlarge, Quality, Lossless, Progressive, Remove metadata, Auto-orient from EXIF, Rotate, and Background.
Limits of the WebP format
Some older desktop software and many print services still do not accept WebP files.
Common questions about WebP
Why won't the program I've used for years open my WebP images? The format only spread after 2020, so older software and some desktop apps still lack support — converting to JPG or PNG keeps them usable everywhere.
Why convert images to WebP? It cuts file sizes by a quarter to a third compared with JPG at the same quality, and every current browser displays it.
Which browsers open WebP images? Every current browser displays WebP, but older Safari releases and older Windows photo viewers do not. A JPEG or PNG copy is still the safe fallback for those.
