About RAR files
WinRAR's proprietary archive format
RAR is a proprietary archive format created by Eugene Roshal and used by WinRAR. It supports strong compression, recovery records and archives split into several parts.
Archives shared online, often split into numbered parts.
RAR: what conversion changes
Converting RAR repacks losslessly.
RAR: settings to change
Before you convert RAR files, you can adjust: Compression level, Split size, Password, and Root folder.
Limits of the RAR format
Creating RAR files requires the licensed WinRAR software, so most tools, including this one, can only read them.
Common questions about RAR
Why can't I create RAR archives with the tools I already have? RAR compression is patented by WinRAR's maker and licensed, not open — every other tool can only unpack it, which is why RAR is best converted to ZIP.
