About MOV files
Apple's QuickTime video container
MOV is the QuickTime container format from Apple. MP4 was based on it, so the two share the same structure, but MOV is also used for editing codecs such as Apple ProRes.
iPhones and many cameras record MOV, and editors such as Final Cut Pro export it.
MOV: what conversion changes
Converting MOV re-encodes video.
MOV: settings to change
Before you convert MOV files, you can adjust: Video codec, Audio codec, Frame rate, Rate control, Width, Quality (CRF), Audio bitrate, Video bitrate, Quality (VBR), Resolution, Sample rate, Colours, Channels, Height, Scale fit, Normalize loudness, Dithering, Encoder preset, Trim start, Trim duration, Keep tags, and Remove metadata.
Limits of the MOV format
Outside Apple software, MOV files that use ProRes or other professional codecs often do not play without extra software.
Common questions about MOV
Why won't my MOV file play on Windows or Android? QuickTime containers often carry Apple-specific codecs such as ProRes, so converting to MP4 with H.264 makes the video play everywhere.
Why convert video to MOV? Mac-based editing is the reason: Final Cut Pro and QuickTime handle it natively, including professional codecs such as ProRes.
Will a MOV file play on Windows? Most MOV files carry H.264 video and play on Windows once the HEVC extension or a codec pack is installed, and QuickTime Player is no longer bundled. iPhone and Mac record MOV natively, while Android needs a player that supports the container.
