About CR2 files
Canon's older camera RAW format
CR2 is the RAW format of Canon cameras before CR3 replaced it in 2018: undeveloped sensor data plus the camera settings, in a TIFF-based file.
Canon EOS DSLRs from the mid-2000s to 2018; Canon Digital Photo Professional and most RAW editors open it.
CR2: what conversion changes
Converting CR2 develops RAW.
CR2: settings to change
Before you convert CR2 files, you can adjust: Width, Height, Scale fit, Crop position, Never enlarge, Quality, Lossless, Progressive, Remove metadata, Auto-orient from EXIF, Rotate, and Background.
Limits of the CR2 format
A CR2 is not a finished picture: it has to be developed (demosaiced) before it can be viewed or shared like a photo.
Common questions about CR2
Why can't my normal photo app open my Canon CR2 files? A RAW file is the sensor's unprocessed data, not a finished picture, and apps without RAW support see only a foreign binary — converting to JPG produces the finished photo.
Can Windows open CR2 raw files? Explorer needs a raw image codec supplied by the camera maker, while macOS and recent iOS versions recognise CR2 out of the box. Phones and browsers without the codec show nothing, so a JPG copy is the reliable way to share one.
