About ARW files
Sony's camera RAW format
ARW (Sony Alpha Raw) is the RAW format of Sony cameras, holding the undeveloped sensor data and the camera settings.
Sony Alpha mirrorless cameras and older Sony DSLRs; Sony Imaging Edge and most RAW editors open it.
ARW: what conversion changes
Converting ARW develops RAW.
ARW: settings to change
Before you convert ARW files, you can adjust: Width, Height, Scale fit, Crop position, Never enlarge, Quality, Lossless, Progressive, Remove metadata, Auto-orient from EXIF, Rotate, and Background.
Limits of the ARW format
Some Sony cameras save compressed ARW files, which apply lossy compression to the raw data itself.
Common questions about ARW
Why won’t Windows Photos show my Sony ARW files? RAW support in Windows depends on the installed codec pack and camera generation, so many ARW files appear as plain icons — converting to JPG needs nothing installed.
Can Windows open ARW raw files? Sony's ARW needs a codec Windows does not ship, and macOS support depends on the camera body. A phone or browser cannot read it at all, so converting to JPG is the practical way to look at or send the photo.
