About ALAC files

Apple's lossless audio codec

Apple Lossless (ALAC) is Apple's lossless audio codec, usually stored in an .m4a file; Apple released it as open source in 2011.

Converting ALAC re-encodes audio.

ALAC: settings to change

Before you convert ALAC files, you can adjust: Audio codec, Rate control, Audio bitrate, Quality (VBR), Sample rate, Channels, Normalize loudness, Trim start, Trim duration, and Keep tags.

Limits of the ALAC format

ALAC files are smaller than WAV but several times larger than AAC, and many devices outside Apple's prefer FLAC.

Common questions about ALAC

Why won't my Windows PC or Android phone play my ALAC files? Apple Lossless rarely ships outside Apple software, so converting to FLAC keeps the lossless quality on the rest of your devices.

Why convert a CD to ALAC? You keep every sample of the original at half the WAV size, and it syncs and plays inside the Apple ecosystem untouched.

Will an ALAC file play on Windows or Android? ALAC plays in Apple Music on macOS and in iTunes for Windows, but Android and most non-Apple players cannot decode it. FLAC or WAV are the interchangeable lossless choices elsewhere.
