About PNG
PNG (Portable Network Graphics) is a lossless image format created in 1996 as a free replacement for GIF. It supports full colour and an alpha channel for transparency.
Screenshots, logos, icons, diagrams and any image with text or sharp edges.
For photos a PNG is several times larger than a JPEG, and plain PNG has no animation (that is APNG).
Convert PNG to JPEG online free, no account required — JPEG is the universal lossy photo format.
Change PNG to JPEG without losing quality — convert PNG to JPEG free in your browser.
Why is my PNG so much bigger than the same photo as JPG? PNG stores every pixel losslessly, which is ideal for screenshots and graphics but wasteful for photos — JPG or WebP compress photographs far more efficiently.
About JPEG
JPEG is the standard lossy image format, named after the Joint Photographic Experts Group that published it in 1992. It shrinks photos to a fraction of their raw size by discarding fine detail.
Photos from cameras and phones, images on the web and email attachments; every device and app opens it.
JPEG has no transparency, stores 8 bits per colour channel, and loses a little more quality every time it is saved again.
Why convert photos to JPG? It is the one image format every website, app and photo service accepts, and at high quality settings the loss is invisible.
What changes when you convert PNG to JPEG
- The PNG picture is re-encoded as JPEG at the default quality settings, so it looks close to the original but is not bit-identical.
- JPEG uses lossy compression: the encoder discards the detail that is least noticeable, so the file is smaller than the PNG but cannot be turned back into the original.
- JPEG cannot store transparency, so any transparent areas of the PNG are filled with a solid background colour (white, unless you choose another one in the settings).
Settings you can change
Before you convert PNG to JPEG, you can adjust: Width, Height, Scale fit, Crop position, Never enlarge, Quality, Lossless, Progressive, Remove metadata, Auto-orient from EXIF, Rotate, and Background.
Limits
Each plan sets a maximum file size and a number of conversions per day, and video and audio files also have a maximum length. Guests can convert files up to 100 megabytes and 5 per day; a free account raises this to 500 megabytes and 25 per day; paid plans go up to 100 gigabytes.
Your converted JPEG file is kept for 2 hours, then deleted.
PNG to JPEG: questions and answers
Does converting PNG to JPEG reduce quality?
The PNG picture is re-encoded as JPEG at the default quality settings, so it looks close to the original but is not bit-identical. JPEG uses lossy compression: the encoder discards the detail that is least noticeable, so the file is smaller than the PNG but cannot be turned back into the original.
What is the difference between PNG and JPEG?
PNG is a lossless image format with transparency. JPEG is the universal lossy photo format.
Can I change the settings when converting PNG to JPEG?
Before you convert PNG to JPEG, you can adjust: Width, Height, Scale fit, Crop position, Never enlarge, Quality, Lossless, Progressive, Remove metadata, Auto-orient from EXIF, Rotate, and Background.
Do I need an account to convert PNG to JPEG?
No. You can convert PNG to JPEG without an account; signing in raises the file-size and daily limits.
How long is my converted JPEG file kept?
The JPEG file you convert from PNG is kept for 2 hours, then deleted automatically.
Do the transparent areas of my PNG survive in JPEG?
JPEG cannot store transparency, so any transparent areas of the PNG are filled with a solid background colour (white, unless you choose another one in the settings).
Will the JPEG file be smaller than my PNG?
JPEG uses lossy compression: the encoder discards the detail that is least noticeable, so the file is smaller than the PNG but cannot be turned back into the original.
